How To Handle a Bully Without Fighting
Bully Buster Program
The Arizona Bully Prevention Initiative- Phoenix Bully Proof Project is dedicated to providing a safe learning and working environment for both our students and our teachers. With that in mind, the district has developed a series of intervention and prevention programs
It is the goal of everyone involved in the Phoenix, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley Arizona based program is to provide effective bullying prevention education, training and resources to parents, teachers, and children.
The Arizona Bullying Prevention Project has teamed up with USA Martial Arts Phoenix and Nottingham Sword and Shield Security to provide free Bully Prevention Workshops throughout the month of October. October is Bully Prevention Month.

When push comes to shove. Does your child know how to handle a situation when it gets physical and they can't just "walk away"?
What happens when the standard advice of "just walk away" fails. What happens after the point where your child may be cornered or out of lesser confrontational options? It's difficult to talk your way out of something when being punched in the face. It's difficult to walk or get away when trapped, held, tackled or pinned and being kicked.
Many parents tell their children to tell a teacher. But what happens when your child is being struck, kick, punched and is in real physical danger from bullying? Do they have the skills to know what to do and when to do it?
BULLY PROOF VEST - The Bullying Armor Option
Our Bullying Proof Vest provides children with practical advice on how to handle bullying peacefully. But when those options are exhausted this program equips them with tools to block, deflect, and escape.
We'll teach him or her:
What parts of the body are most likely to be struck or injured
Which parts of the anatomy are most important to protect
When attacks are most likely to come
When bullying is most likely to take place
Where bullying is most likely to take place
How bullying can be thwarted and de-escalated
When everything goes bad, what you can do to stay safe
For more information on how your child can learn how to effectively defend themselves from bullying before and when it gets physical contact us at one of the sources below.
(Arizona Bullying Prevention)- Law Enforcement, Military and Bodyguard trainer John Nottingham has decided to incorporate martial arts into the school safety program for elementary, middle and high school students in Phoenix, Arizona. Children are taught self-defense strategies, as well as conflict resolution skills in the class. Read the blog article below to learn more about this bullying prevention initiative.
Children learn verbal judo, self-defense to resolve conflicts peacefully
As bullying, safety concerns and teen suicide continue to appear as news headlines some parents are taking a different approach to preparing their children for school and life. Along with the 911 system, learning to swim, now parents are adding in abduction prevention, self defense from depression, obesity, diabetes and bullying. They are doing this at USA Martial Arts Phoenix.
Bullying is the most common form of violence in American society according to The National Association of School Psychologists. Bullying affects 15 percent to 30 percent of students as either bullies or victims.
While many schools have in place zero-tolerance rules against bullying, but these don't always deflect bully attacks. That's where martial arts Master John Nottingham comes in.
Nottingham, an Army Airborne veteran and 30 year martial arts and self defense trainer, has developed a program called "BULLY PROOF VEST" that prepares children of varying ages to deal with bullying and other safety issues they might face, such as abductions and abuse.
Through a two-hour class that teaches verbal tactics and strategies (as opposed to strictly physical self-defense moves), Nottingham's "Bully Proof Vest" self-defense and escape school course gives children confidence to resolve self defense and safety issues in and out of the classroom.
Bullying Help. A Government View and a Private Initiative View.
The following information provides resources and contact numbers for obtaining additional help with bullying. It is important to note that this has some conspicuously missing components, as with most government and education institutional based bullying programs- physical intervention. What should you (or your child if a parent) do when you are in immediate physical danger?
What Happens When Bullying Gets Violent?
The most prevalent training programs suggest that you call the police or tell and adult or do not even acknowledge physical violence. Trying to talk ones way out of a bullying situation when it has gone physically abusive is an inappropriate and very dangerous response. This is where my programs are different.
When push comes to shove, our constitution guarantees our right to self defense. Physical intervention is a critical step in learning how to deal with physical bullying. As a private bully prevention training organization we have more latitude in offering physical intervention options. Although it is always a last resort, it is, and should be an option for children to know how to deal with a physical assault.
Isn't survival self defense a fundamental human right?
Our Bullying Prevention and Self Defense programs teach:
Assessment skills to be able to better predict when a bullying situation could get physical.
Physical intervention skills that are humane and force appropriate, usually using the minimum amount of force to escape to safety. The techniques are drawn from law enforcement and bodyguard security tactics which minimize harm to either child.
Advocates responsibility rather than abdication for protection.
Cover and evacuate drills.
Using barriers and other physical environmental geometry for defense and protection.
Using distractions and diversions to create great window opportunity for escape.
Encourage open discussion with parents on when and where it is appropriate to use physical intervention skills for protection and the responsibility and consequences that comes with them.
My team and I have been teaching men, women and children self defense and bullying solutions for over 25 years. We've helped thousands of children successfully deal with bullying problems and helped them rebuild self-esteem and peace of mind. Please note that though the Federal Departments of Health and Human Services and Education care deeply about bullying, they are limited in their ability to intervene in specific cases; bullying and other discipline policies and laws are set at the state and local levels.
John Nottingham says he started the Arizona Bullying Initiative | AZ Bully Prevention Project to address several growing issues. Schools, parents and teachers are seeking Nottingham's unique program to address the issues of school violence, bullying and how to resolve conflicts peacefully. But before you think he is all about kicking and punching, you might be surprised to find out this former soldier is promoting peace in an entertaining way.
The premise of our program is providing effective tools to protect children. Our foundation is a wise martial arts philosophy, "The battle avoided cannot be lost."
Nottingham is a military, bodyguard and law enforcement trainer in addition to teaching over 10,000 students in his career. This former Army Airborne soldier who served in a Special Forces unit outlines the reasons for developing his unique bullying prevention and school violence program.
BULLY PROOF VEST - How To Deal With Bullying Without Fighting
The Arizona Bullying Intervention Initiative | The AZ Bullying Prevention Project
1. The need for evidence based bullying training (bullying is a characterization of human conflict and behavior). Most of the bullying prevention programs are NOT developed by professional protectors (security, bodyguards, etc.). Why? This fact makes our program very different.
2. To address the facts of the issue and cut through the political movements efforts to sensationalize certain aspects of it, robbing people of peace-of-mind and confusing them with misguided, although well-intentioned, and well packaged information.
3. I disagree with the "Anti-bully" effort. Our research indicates that it is causing more harm than good in some cases. I've been posting blog articles about it. I don't believe in vilifying children. Our approach is pro-children. We advocate a different approach. Denial is never a good safety strategy. "Make the bullies go away" is like wishing all criminals magically disappeared to the land of gumdrops, unicorns and rainbows.
4. I believe we are the only group combining bodyguard (security) strategies with the life skills wisdom of martial arts and social skills to address bullying behavior. I've integrated my skills as an advanced threat assessment specialist into my program.
3 Pronged Approach treats:
1. The targeted child of bullying -making them a "harder" less desirable target. Taking them off the bullying child's radar.
2. The bullying child. Statistically, this child is likely to have been bullied and needs treatment.
3. The bystander and social environment enabling the bullying behavior and process.
The major issue with most "school based" or academic programs is that it relies heavily on the school staff. Most of them are already overburdened and ill equipped to handle violence as we have seen in recent history. We know that most bullying takes place when the teachers are not around. Bullying children choose the times when teachers aren't present... the school bus stop, the transition points without supervision. Isolation and control are the setting for abuse. The other times the social group is part of bullying, enabling it. We arm children with the skills to be prepared for such times.
The second major issue with the school based programs is that they are so fearful of liability (a very real concern) that they NEVER address the physical intervention skills needed to protect a child's life. They instead abdicate or ignore it all together. This is endangers a child.
Our 5 Step Approach teaches a complete approach to:
Here are the concepts, not the steps:
Detect
Deter
De-escalate/Diffuse
Defend (with appropriate force - just enough to escape)

Phoenix Arizona Martial Arts Master John Nottingham and his team of Black Belt instructors are teaching an evidence based new technique for dealing with bullying. It's called THE BULLY-PROOF VEST. Developed in 1992, it has been continually updated and refined to include cyber-bullying and other current trends. The Bully Proof Vest program teaches children the skills they need for HOW TO DEAL WITH BULLYING - often without fighting or violence.
How To Deal With Bullying Behavior
Nottingham says his approach is highly practical, unlike some of the other academic and politically motivated "anti-bully" programs out there. Furthermore it does not send mixed messages to children about dangerous situations. It is a common sense approach to protecting children and equipping them with the tools they need to detect, deter, de-escalate and defend themselves.
We Don't Promote Dangerous Unpractical Myths As "Just Walk Away" or "Just Ignore It". Those misguided approaches have caused children to be hurt. Denial is never a sound self defense strategy. Instead we prepare children to recognize, predict and prevent bullying situations from starting - many times by befriending the child engaged in bullying behavior.
Nottingham, owner of Nottingham Sword & Shield Security, ScottsdaleBodyguard.com and USA Martial Arts has over 25 of experience helping thousands of boys and girls successfully deal with bullying. He developed The Arizona Bullying Intervention Initiative - The AZ Bully Prevention Project to teach children, parents and teachers bodyguard skills to prepare, prevent bullying and promote peaceful resolutions to conflict.
We accomplish this without encroaching on constitutional free speech rights, nor by vilifying children with labels such as "bully". Bullying is a behavior, a cry for help from a child. Our approach helps children learn life skills and lessons that will not only help them have more confidence in resolving bullying situations but help keep them safe for the rest of their lives.
Nottingham and representatives from his Bodyguard group and Black Belts from his school are offering a series of FREE Bully Proof Vest Workshops for Phoenix Arizona Children, Parents and Teachers.
Be Your Own Bully Guard - Wear Your Bully Proof Vest!
"We're providing information from the protective fields from which they would normally never have access. The Bully Proof Vest program teaches a highly effective and proven 3 pronged, 5 step method. It includes what we call THE THREE SHIELDS, as part of a childs vest. It protects from the various kinds of bullying and helps children put things into perspective to ACT rather than REACT.", said Nottingham

“It does so in a way that ensures schools are protecting all children from bullying and harassment regardless of their background, including their sexual orientation and gender identity,” Holden explained. “Without that language schools then ignore their responsibility to protect these kids and then we see some really serious consequences.”
