How To Avoid Being a Target for Bullying
Rigby (2002), who is a respected researcher on the topic of bullying, nationally and internationally, states:
Bullying involves a desire to hurt + hurtful action + a power imbalance + (typically) repetition + an unjust use of power + evident enjoyment by the aggressor and generally a sense of being oppressed on the part of the victim.” (p 51)
"Children Who Bully Look For Easy Targets"
10 Signs Children May Be an Easy Target for Bullying Behavior

Research has revealed a number of characteristics and behaviors that put children at risk for victimization.*

It may not be your fault that a someone chose to be a bully, but you can do something about it to change the fact that they are bullying you.  There is hope.

1. Children signally perceived vulnerability - look like an easy target, scared or weak
2. Children they think won't tell or enforce a consequence
3. Children they think they can control  (usually through intimidation, mocking, threats and so on.)
4. Children who they think they can provoke a reaction - usually anger or hurt
5. Children who do not know how to deny opportunity "take the bait and fall into the trap"
6. Children who pose no consequence to them
7. Children who react with exaggerated emotion such as crying or other outbursts
8. Children who just take the abuse, seem meek or quiet
9. Children who are "loners" or tend to isolate themselves or seem withdrawn
10. Children who have difficulty making friends easily

You can learn how to effectively handle bullying behavior.  The Arizona Bullying Intervention Initiative - Bully Prevention Project works with a team of dedicated specialists to help bully-proof and victim-target proof Arizona Children.

Bullying Prompts Parental Action in Phoenix Arizona

You may have read the Phoenix papers headlines...

"Alleged bullying prompts parents pull kids from parochial school" -Phoenix News, AZFamily.com

"Former education secretary hosts Phoenix cyberbullying forum" -The Arizona Republic

"New Arizona bill would aim to stop bullying at schools" - AZfamily.com

"Arizona school officials address bullying"

"Bullying has been thrust again into national headlines with the suicide of a 15-year-old Massachusetts girl after months of threats and harassment."-AZCentral.com

Every day, 160,000 students skip school because they fear being bullied, according to the PACER Center, a parent training and information center for families of children. According to the National Association of School Psychologists,
  • 1 in 7 schoolchildren is a bully or victim
  • Bullying affects 5 million school children in U.S.
A private Arizona statewide initiative by a local bodyguard security and law enforcement trainer provides resources, training and unconventional advice to parents, teachers and children to handle bullies without fighting.

Bad Bullying Advice
Unlike other programs this Bully Target Proofing Method trains children to learn how to solve bullying problems in unconventional ways.  There is a lot of bad, although well-intentioned, advice going around. Most often we're seeing prescription without diagnosis, a common problem in self defense advice.

Zero Tolerance Bully Policies
Vilifying children as "bullies" and developing politically motivated, "zero tolerance" policies can create more problems and may increase bullying. Crippling children by allowing them to be labeled "victims" and seeking to blame others is problematic on several levels.  This approach only addresses the symptom and does little to solve the problem or give the child effective coping skills.  The AZ Bullying Intervention Initiative uses Bodyguard trainer John Nottingham's 5 Step Approach on How to Handle a Bully Without Fighting equips individuals to problem solve, demystify the bullying cycle and treats the problem at its core.

Unique Training on How To Deal With Bullies
The Bullies To Buddies Program Offers Clever Tips on Handling a Bully Without Fighting such as:
  • Stay calm. Fear and stress management tools to learn to act rather than react.
  • Prevent sending "Bully Me -I'm an Easy Target" signals
  • Acting brave and projecting confidence. Developing strong social skills and leadership confidence and tools such as humor with a fun approach to role playing.
  • Turn the bully into a buddy. Children are taught the person with the most friends almost always wins.
In addition to these skills this 3 pronged bully solutions approach develops parents, teachers and other advocacy.
Treating the:
1. Child demonstrating bullying behavior - sometimes targets of bullying themselves
2. The targeted child of bullying
3. The social environment that enables the bullying behavior, peers, environment, timing, etc.

Bullying Advocate Intervention
Parental and Teacher Skills: Leading Verbal Judo and role play with empowering body language.
  • Be a Buddy, Protector Pal or a Hallway Hero.  Standing by and saying nothing encourages a bully.
  • Stepping up and standing up for someone is the right thing to do.
Through using a series of Verbal Judo skills they teach to Law Enforcement and deflection techniques for bodyguards, the AZ Bully Intervention Initiative - Bullying Prevention Project trains individuals and groups how to:
  • Recognize what makes a child a likely target for bullying and other early danger signs
  • Prevent the motive, opportunity or ability for a bullying situation to form
  • Know to to intervene and thwart bullying behavior
  • To recognize and avoid the HOT ZONES where bullying usually takes place
Parents learn How To Recognize Signs That Your Child is Being Bullied
Teachers learn where, how and when most bullying situations take place for students. Other material covered is cyber bullying, emotional bullying, physical bullying and more.

Research on Bullies

National Association of School Psychologists

1 in 7 schoolchildren is a bully or victim

Bullying affects 5 million school children in U.S.

British Medical Journal, September, 1999 Dr. Riittakerttu Kaltiala-Heino

Survey of 16,410 students ages 14-16 in Finland found:

1/3 of children who admitted to bullying frequently said they were also victims of bullying

Depression was as common among bullies as victims

Severe suicidal thoughts were more prevalent in bullies than victims

British Medical Journal, September, 1999 Chris Rissel

Survey of 3,918 Australian children ages 11-15 found:

Half of bullies were also targets of bullying, most were boys

Bullies who also were bullied had poorest psychosocial profile

These youth reported high rates of smoking as well as headaches, stomachaches, sadness and trouble sleeping

Victims scored highest on measures of loneliness, followed by bully/victims

BULLY FREE Event for School Children in Phoenix Arizona

PHOENIX SCHOOL CHILDREN – BULLY FREE!
Grade School Bullying | Middle School Bullying | High School Bullying

Sponsored by The Arizona Bully Intervention Initiative - Bully Proof Project

On each Wednesday evening in the month of March, USA Martial Arts Phoenix will be hosting a series of free “Bully Busters - How To Turn Bullies Into Buddies” seminar for children, in order to demonstrate methods of defending and defusing potential situations involving bullies. Participants will be taught how to "Deter, Detect, Deflect and Defend" themselves against abuse from other children using Verbal Judo diffusion techniques, recognizing warning signs early, and brains over brawn violence-prevention social skills.
"The battle avoided cannot be lost." -Caine from the TV series Kung Fu quoting Sun Tzu

The message USA Martial Arts Phoenix staff teaches is that “the highest goal of the martial artist is to prevent violence before it starts”. Other practical lessons from martial arts wisdom include,
"Who is mighty? One who can make friends out of enemies."
The students will practice various methods of practical and proper use of last resort self defense (only what is necessary to keep from being injured and escape) during the seminar, and afterward will earn a certificate recognize the completion of their training. Interested students will have the option of continuing their education by enrolling for membership at the martial arts school at introductory rates.

Your child may be a target for bullying but they do not have to be a victim.  Unlike other programs promoting "anti-bully" themes in which children are labeled weak self pitying "victims", our program promotes individual responsibility, empowerment and learning skills that can help a child for life. There is hope!
  • Our three pronged Bullying Intervention approach treats the targeted child of bullying, the bullying behavior as well as the social environment enabling bullying.
  • Our 5 step How to Turn a Bully into a Buddy process encourages strong social skills, confidence building and uses common sense before self defense. Unlike other programs, we'll actually show your child simple and effective "last resort" defensive techniques in case they are physically attacked.
  • Children enjoy the exciting martial arts format and learn that they can avoid a fight and still walk away with dignity like a Black Belt.
  • Children learn the 3 Shields Strategy and "Bullying Word Blocks" from Verbal Judo, using humor, fear management skills.
  • Other children learn the value of being a "Hallway Hero" and "Protector Pal"
  • This AZ Bullying Prevention Program avoids the political labeling and the failing mindset of "BAD BULLY", "HELPLESS VICTIM" and reveals the danger posed to children in having politically motivated "zero tolerance" policies that lack common sense. The research will shock you.
  • Unlike other Bully programs, this one is designed to protect children, rather than only protect the schools and administrators from legal liability (although it will do that too).
  • Prevents blame shifting from children, parents, teachers and school administration by promoting responsibility, communication, mutual respect and common sense problem solving.
  • Gives hurting people the help, compassion and resources they need to change it.

USA Martial Arts Phoenix AZ is committed to community awareness, working in tandem with our local schools and through community events, in order to promote a safe environment for our children.

MMA Fighting Legend Frank Shamrock Launches Anti-Bullying Campaign

Arizona Bully Proof Training is a proud supporter of Stand Together, an anti-bullying campaign started by UFC and Strikeforce legend Frank Shamrock.  After retiring from professional mixed martial arts fighting in June of 2010, Frank has been busy promoting his newest endeavor, Stand Together.

His tagline, "Stand Together With Me Against Bullying" capitalizes on his public persona and celebrity status to spread the word about stopping bullying.

Formerly fighting in the cage, Mr. Shamrock is now fighting to raise awareness about the problem of bullying. We Stand Together Against Bullying founded by Frank Shamrock, is an international non-profit campaign to combat bullying around the world.

According to MMAfighting.com, Shamrock had spent most of the last decade in one institutionalized setting or another, whether it was group homes, youth crisis centers, or prison. His adopted father, Bob Shamrock, pointed him in the direction of the Lion's Den, then an unknown gym for a mostly unknown sport, and run by Frank's adopted older brother Ken. The first day Shamrock walked in the door, he was told he'd be getting a "tryout."

He would go on to stardom as a 5 time World Champion and be one of the most winning MMA fighters of the next decade.  But there is more to this man than cage fighting and muscles.

"If we all Stand Together: there will be no Bullies in our world." - Frank Shamrock, UFC Champion
You can visit the Stand Together website here and watch videos of some of todays most popular Mixed Martial Arts Fighters taking a stand against bullying.

New Arizona Safe Schools Act Bill Aims to Prevent Bullying in Schools

Can Legislation Reduce Bullying in Arizona Schools?

  • Can we have our representatives enact new laws to help protect children?
  • Does this have any impact on the lives of Arizona's children?
  • How exactly will this law reduce bullying?
  • What research supports this action of enacting new AZ legislation?
  • Should this be up to the government or in the control of parents, teachers, school boards and local communities?
  • Is Bullying legislation needed?
  • How will this affect your child?

These questions and more are being debated with a new bill that aims to halt bullying at schools in Arizona.

http://www.azfamily.com/news/local/New-bill-would-aim-to-put-a-stop-to-bullying-at-schools-116197719.html
http://www.myfoxphoenix.com/dpp/news/politics/state_politics/arizona-safe-schools-act-introduced-02142011
Sam Holdren with Equality Arizona helped write the bill.

“It does so in a way that ensures schools are protecting all children from bullying and harassment regardless of their background, including their sexual orientation and gender identity,” Holden explained. “Without that language schools then ignore their responsibility to protect these kids and then we see some really serious consequences.”

Justin Bieber on Bullying from the Ellen TV Show

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFq2plAG4pA&feature=related
Ellen, Dr. Phil, Oprah, Justin Bieber Talk about Bullying

Justin Bieber takes a stand against bullying on an appearance on Ellen.  Here's a quote from Justin Bieber.
"I just wanted to say there's nothing cool about being a bully.  If you're getting bullied make sure to tell someone and you know, it gets better.  If you're a bystander, make sure to step in and help out."
More and more celebrities and leaders are speaking out on the topic of bullying.  The Ellen show has devoted significant effort and time to the cause as well as Dr. Phil, Oprah and many other mainstream television shows.  The Justin Bieber clip above of from the Ellen show where Justin Bieber makes frequent appearances.

While most of these shows send a message to improve "awareness", few if any do anything to address the physical bullying.  Our Bullying Prevention Program teaches all phases of the bullying prevention and resolution process including physical intervention options.

Thanks to Ellen, Dr. Phil, Oprah, Justin Bieber and others for taking a stand and speaking out about bullying.

The Ryan Halligan Story - Arizona Bully Intervention Project

Ryan was bullied.  He reached out for help and did what people told him.  He asked his Dad if he would teach him to fight so he could defend himself.  His father, much like any loving Dad, took his son into the basement, put on the boxing gloves and taught him what he knew about dealing with bullies.

What Ryans parents did not know was the the depth of the battle going on inside their boy.  Tormented by ongoing bullying at school, then later online through cyberbullying, Ryan suffered and felt he had no escape - no alternatives.  Ryan Halligan committed suicide by hanging himself.  Now his father speaks to school children all over the country and delivers his message of hope and love to all children who feel like his son.

Friends, there is hope.  You may have tried other things, you may feel trapped right now but there are people who care and tools to help you make this stop.

The Arizona Bully Initiative is a Bully Intervention Project that provides education, public speaking, tools, information and resources to help stop bullying.
